Running the Survey

Inspired by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, the Wichita Clinic Founders’ Circle project was designed to incorporate nature and a sense of Wright’s Prairie Style architecture as patients and visitors move through the facility. Each space is unique, but united on campus by the exterior elements and interior themes of wood trim, period lighting elements and overall theme. The project consists of an ambulatory surgery center, medical office space, diagnostic imaging and administrative support spaces. Planning for a future hospital on site drove decisions early about where to position the building on site and what type of construction would be used to best capture the future elements. In the end, several different structural systems were used. This gave the Wichita Clinic maximum future flexibility and at the same time offered great value for the immediate construction project.

Laying the Foundation

This was an inspired project as stakeholders met regularly to review project plans, make adjustments and review progress. While each have their specific roles, the owner and the design and construction teams worked together and in close communication as the work progressed. Design packages were split into phases so work could start on the site while interiors were still being refined. Site construction teams focused early in the project on the complicated foundation wall activities. Concrete wall pours were scheduled every three days and continued undelayed for four months. Precast concrete was used for various areas of the building due to its fire resistive abilities, while steel framing offered an affordable option for other locations. Nearly all type of structural framing elements were used in one facet or another on the project, each providing just the right solution to a very unique design.
