Running the Survey
Remodel or start over? The hospital needed new systems to make it compliant with current codes. The city did not want to close its only hospital but didn’t have the funds to build new. SPT Architecture, city staff and Hutton Construction developed a plan to completely remodel the hospital with funds that were available. The challenge of keeping the hospital operating during the remodel required many hours of planning, presenting, evaluation and revision, but was successfully completed to everyone’s satisfaction.
Laying the Foundation
The existing structure was as low as 9 feet in places. How do you install all-new mechanical and electrical systems in such confined spaces and keep the hospital operational while doing it? We built a mechanical and electrical highway on top of the existing roof for all this to take place. It also will aid the hospital with better access for future maintenance. The Hutton project manager and superintendent carefully planned the remodel considering construction access, hospital operation, staff access and patient needs. Their efforts were rewarded with a project completed on time and without any staff, patient or worker issues.
The Finishing Touches
The hard work and collaboration from all team members could not have turned out better. Marion has a striking new hospital that includes a new physical therapy area and pool, operating room, ER, lab, patients’ rooms, centrally located nurses’ station and a gorgeous entry and lobby. The hospital is one that everyone will be proud of for the next 60 years. Combine the hospital with the auditorium and recreation center that we completed during an earlier project, and Marion has a lot to be proud of – a great foundation to build on for future generations.
