Running the Survey

The goal of this project was to accommodate the similar needs of the Kansas Humane Society and Wichita Animal Shelter and to combine their very different functions into one campus to serve the entire city. We were selected early in the process and provided structure and information on how to best use material and methods that work well for both projects. We proposed using three separate contracts, one with the City of Wichita, one with the Humane Society and a third for the site work. The site contract was split equally between both parties. This allowed the clean-up process to begin early while plans were still being completed, and final budgets and financing to be arranged for both parties. The result was that the completion date remained unchanged.

Laying the Foundation

The project started late in the year, but dirt work was completed before winter set in. Meetings were held diligently through the design and construction process to ensure that each detail was addressed. Both owners’ needs were addressed, paying special attention to their specific functions and optimized costs, making sure each received the product they desired. The result is two buildings that complement each owner and provide a single animal care complex for the entire city.

The Finishing Touches

The entry plaza offers a welcoming, inviting feel, and highlights inlaid artwork at the entrances. Experts were brought in from around the country to ensure that the facilities were constructed in a way to prevent the spread of germs and diseases. Consequently, the control features are among the nation’s most advanced. The kennel areas are easy to clean and offer great sound control for both animal and caretaker comfort. Adoption areas are inviting and functional for visitors seeking a new pet. The veterinary care area is state-of-the art including operating and exam spaces. The City of Wichita and the Kansas Humane Society have a one-of-a-kind animal care facility.
